Story Outline for Movie [Cherrie]
母爱是世界上最普通又最伟大的情感，它会使平凡变得崇高。
Maternal love is the most common and yet the greatest affection one can experience in the world. It defines sublimity with platitude.
南方的大山里有一个村子，村里有一个先天智障的年轻女人，名叫樱桃。樱桃是美好的，她有一颗金子一样纯真的心灵，还有一副清水芙蓉般的相貌，就像她的名字一样。
In a small village on a mountain in Southern China, there was an intellectually delinquent young woman by the name of Cherrie.
樱桃已经嫁人了。丈夫名叫葛望，是个小儿麻痹症患者，走路一跛一跛的，人也长得瘦小单薄。由于智力上的原因，樱桃除了会放放猪喂喂鸡，别的什么都不会做，全家就靠葛望一个人维持生活，因此日子过得相当清苦。
Cherrie was married to Ge Wang, slim and crippled. He couldn’t walk straight. Because of her mental state, Cherrie was unable to find a proper job except walking the hogs and feeding the chicken. Ge Wang alone was hence responsible for feeding the entire family. Making the ends meet wasn’t easy.
艰苦的生活并不能泯灭樱桃作为女人的天性。她喜欢孩子，喜欢得无以复加。一看到孩子就想抱抱摸摸，不管那是谁家的孩子。可是孩子们都很怕她，怕她这个“傻子”，一见到她，立刻跑得远远的。为此不知闹出了多少笑话。
Tough living hadn’t diminished Cherrie’s maternal nature. She adored children. She just couldn’t resist the temptation of caressing children regardless of where they came from. However, kids were scared of her. They were wary of this “coot” or “dummy”. They were quick to run away whenever she came near them. Funny stories abound.
出于女人的天性，樱桃特别想自己生一个孩子,因此特别热衷于跟丈夫做房事，每次房事后，还要到镜子前边照一照，看看是否怀孕了。樱桃家里有一张年画，画上是一个胖娃娃笑呵呵地举着一条大鲤鱼。后来有一天，葛旺发现家里的年画被撕了一个洞，那个胖小子不见了。原来，樱桃把它贴在了自己的肚子上，见人就撩起衣服说，表明她有了孩子了。葛望为此十分恼火，又想起樱桃以前的种种“罪行”，竟把樱桃赶出了家门。
Out of her maternal nature, Cherrie really wished to have a child of her own. Because of this desire, she was quite enthusiastic about making love to her husband. She would go check her tummy out in front of the mirror to see whether she was already pregnant right after the thing. Hanging on the wall at home was a Chinese New Year picture in which there was a fat boy holding a big carp with a board smile. One day, Ge Wang noticed that picture was ripped off with a hole left and the fat boy disappeared. What actually happened was that Cherrie stuck that torn piece onto her tummy, and showed it to everybody walking by with the intention of telling that she had a baby. Ge Wang was furious over that incident. Considering all the “offenses” Cherrie had committed in the past, Ge Wang expelled her out of home.
就在这天夜里，樱桃捡到了一个被人遗弃的女婴……
On the night of this very day, Cherrie found a deserted baby girl laying right next to her…
有了孩子的樱桃，立刻焕发出母亲的天性，就像一个生过孩子的熟练母亲，嘀嘀咕咕地跟孩子说话，给孩子把尿，还给孩子取了一个好听的名字：红红。
With this child, Cherrie radiated with her mother nature. Like an experienced mother, she would talk to the child, look after all her biological needs, and gave her a pretty name “Hong Hong”.
葛旺本来就想要个孩子，樱桃生不了捡了一个也不错，因为是个女婴,葛旺就很不情愿。而且，自从有了红红，樱桃就不愿意和他做房事了，每天无论在家还是外出，无论吃饭还是睡觉都抱着孩子不离身。葛旺觉得只有把红红抱走才能回到以前的生活，便想方设法要把她送出去，樱桃死活不肯。后来有一天，葛望终于趁樱桃熟睡的时候悄悄地把红红抱走，送给了一对开着一辆红色小汽车的城里夫妇。
Ge Wang did hope to have a child. It would have been nice to have picked one despite that wasn’t personally given birth to. Yet Ge Wang was rather unwilling since it was a baby girl. Furthermore, Cherrie stopped making love to him right after Hong Hong joined the family. Cherrie would carry Hong Hong with her around the house, eating or sleeping. Ge Wang came to realize that the only way to return his life to normal was to send Hong Hong away. He tried numerous ways, and Cherrie fought against all of them. One day, Ge Wang took the baby in Cherrie’s sound sleep and pass it to a city couple with a red car.
樱桃醒过来，发现红红不在身边，马上就朝村外跑，恰好看见了红色小汽车，不顾一切向车追去。车越开越远，樱桃还是穷追不舍，一直追到了城里。在漫无边际的城市里，她一辆一辆地敲打着停在路旁的红色小汽车……
Cherrie woke up to find that Hong Hong had disappeared. She rushed outside and happened to see the red car leaving. She took off to chase the car while the car gradually disappeared in front of her eyes. She continued to run in the direction and eventually crossed the city boundary. She was lost in the big city, pounding on the windows of every red car she came cross…
费尽周折，红红最终回到了樱桃的身边。
After going through all the hardships looking for the baby, Hong Hong finally came back to Cherrie.
红红渐渐长成了一个机灵可爱小女孩。她就像那群小猪一样离不开樱桃。在红红的记忆里，这是她一生中最幸福也最快乐的一段时光……
Hong Hong had grown into a smart and lovely girl. She stayed behind Cherrie the way those hogs did. In Hong Hong’s memory, this was the happiest time of her entire life…
红红上学了。她知道自己的妈妈是个傻子。她也常常因此受到同学的欺辱。她为此感到羞愧和痛苦，也为此讨厌甚至怨恨w樱桃，还经常斥骂她。有一天，红红为了不让樱桃到学校来，锁上了家门。不料这一天下起了雨。樱桃为了给红红送伞，从窗口跳出来，跑到了学校。后来因为一个男同学嘲笑樱桃，红红便和那个同学打了起来，樱桃见红红挨打，马上过来帮忙……
Hong Hong started schooling. She knew her mother was intellectually delinquent, and she was oftentimes abused by her classmates because of it. She felt embarrassed and hurt. She developed resentment toward Cherrie, and even accused her at times. One day, Hong Hong locked up Cherrie so that Cherrie couldn’t go to her school. It rained on that day unexpectedly. Cherrie broke the windows and rushed to school in order to bring Hong Hong an umbrella. A boy student made fun of Cherrie, which caused a fight between him and Hong Hong. Cherrie saw Hong Hong getting hit and intervened immediately…
当晚，被打的同学家长来到葛家要陪医药费，陪不出就乱砸东西，葛旺一气之下拿起棍子就打樱桃，葛红哭了冲过去抱住爸爸的腿喊道：“爸！别打啦！是我不好！要打就打我吧！”那些人实在看不下去就悄悄走了。这时，葛旺一把抱住樱桃痛哭起来：“对不起，是我没出息，家里太穷！没钱！让你们受苦了！小红啊，你长大一定争气啊！”
On that evening, the injured boy’s parents came over to Ge’s house demanding a medical compensation and smashed some furniture. Ge Wang got very upset and started beating Cherrie with a club. Hong Hong ran to her father pleading to stop the beating. “Dad, stop it! I’m the person to blame! Hit me if you must!” Those who came for a revenge left after witnessing this saga. Ge Wang took Cherrie into his arms and cried, “I am so sorry. It’s my fault. We are broke! No money! I’ve let you down! Little Hong Hong, you must grow to earn respect from others!”
葛红对樱桃的态度发生了变化，有时还帮母亲洗头，仿佛又回到从前他们那样赶着小猪，哼着山歌的幸福时光……
Hong Hong showed a major change in her manners toward Cherrie. At times, she even helped shampoo her mother’s hair. It was like returning to the happy days they had before, walking the hogs while singing the folk songs…
这一天，红红病了。
One day, Hong Hong became ill.
为了给红红摘她爱吃得野樱桃，樱桃失踪了，不知是死是活。
To pick the wild cherries for Hong Hong, something happened to Cherrie who was later declared missing. Her status remained unknown.
“……从小到大，娘为我吃了那么多苦。她是那么疼我，怕我饿，怕我冷。在我很小的时候，她每天晚上都要拍着我睡觉。人们都说娘是傻子，也许她真的很傻。可是，作为母亲，作为妈妈，她却有着一颗比天还大的爱心！我真后悔当初没有好好待她……”这是红红的心声。
“….From day one, my mom suffered enormous hardships to look after my well-being. She cherished me, made sure I wasn’t hungry, made sure I was warm enough. When I was very small, she paddled me into sleep. Others said that my mom was a fool. Yes, perhaps she was… But, as a mother, she had a heart bigger than the sky! I am extremely regretful that I was not nice to her…” said Hong Hong.
红红长大了，考上了医科大学，她一直相信妈妈还活在世上，所以一直在寻找她……
Hong Hong grew up, admitted to a medial school. She never gave up believing that her mother was still alive. Her search for Cherrie persisted…
